Sally Cookie

Last summer I went to see my favorite cartoonist, Nicole Hollander of Sylvia fame, speak at the Enoch Pratt Library. She mentioned that her cat, Sally Cookie, had passed away. I offered to do a pet portrait for her in thanks for all the hours of enjoyment & affirmation that Sylvia has given me over the years. Nicole is sending me a cartoon in appreciation of my painting of Sally Cookie. Cat art to cat art!

"I was speaking at the Enoch Pratt Free Library in the Edgar Allan Poe room. Very beautiful library in Baltimore which is kept in fine shape by a long list of well-know authors. At the end of the evening a young woman called Spoon Popkin, the last name she assures me is real, offered to paint Sally Cookie as a gift for me. Sally nudged me from beyond and said "say yes and thank you, don't fumble around." So I did and soon it will be here. Thank you, Spoon.- Nicole Hollander"

Testimonials & Recent Commissions

"I can't tell you how delighted I am with the portrait of Bernie. You have completely captured the moment from the photo and the essence of his sweet disposition. I will treasure this piece for years to come.
Regards, Rachel"

"I look at my Henry the cat portrait every day and feel that a bit of his spirit is still here with me. Spoon was really able to capture the true essence of his being and his portrait has offered great comfort to me. In addition to being just a lovely pictural portrayal of my pet, Spoon was able to go deep below just what he looked like, to capture, and portray a bit of the life force of my beloved cat."- Beth Bell

I now have a site on Etsy for my new thing- Damn Good Doormats!
I believe the entrance to your home should reflect the individual person inside. My 100% coconut fiber doormats have a latex backing keeping the mat firmly in place. Every one is hand stenciled with exterior latex paint and finished with a coat of polyurethane for wear resistance. They are air pressure sprayed, not spray paint! Longer lasting and better for the earth. Whenever possible, my paint is salvaged keeping our landfills latex free. Unless otherwise noted, all mats are 18" x 24"

CUSTOM DOORMATS ARE AVAILABLE! I can put your pet's name on the mat!

Damn Good Doormats

Out of Baltimore, these 100% coconut-fiber doormats are hand-stenciled with either a custom design, or existing action like a snarky homage to Baltimore's old “Believe” anti-drug campaign (empty beer can, crumpled bag of chips, fish skeleton), or a silver Michael Jackson glove next to “Beat It”, sure to be ignored by DC's many smooth criminals.

Check out tons of other designs just begging you to wipe your feet on them

Spoon Popkin: Presidential Pets
"Our true personalities are often reflected through our pets. The same goes for our President's Pets. Bush Jr's favorite cow Ofelia has a carefree roguish quality that easily reflects Bush's attitude toward foreign policy."

Paintings and drawings by Spoon Popkin
Also included are a series of sketches of animals drawn in my residency behind the scenes at The Baltimore Zoo.

Exhibition dates 4/28/09- 5/25/09

Opening Tuesday, May 12, 2009, 6-8 p.m.
